Holy Orders

When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. ‘Do you understand’, he said, ‘what have done to you? You call me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am. If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.’

Gospel according to St. John 13:12-15

Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry.

It includes three degrees: episcopate [bishop], presbyterate [priest], and diaconate [deacon].

Marriage

“For this reason a man shall leave [his] father and [his] mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.

” This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the church. In any case, each one of you should love his wife as himself, and the wife should respect her husband. “

St Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians 5:31-33

The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptised persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament
